Following a whirlwind recent run, nobody would have blamed manager Matt
Morris if he were to have felt slightly aggrieved that the March manager of the
month award did not arrive at Churchill Close, and rather went to the Westlands
manager. After 5 wins from the last 5 and only 1 conceded, Stur had been in top
form.
In this game against a decent Parley side, the home side were pleased to
welcome back Wood from suspension, Littler after leaving for Wessex League New
Milton earlier in the season and Neville. However there were knocks being
carried by Goodwin, Jones and Gage.
The game could not have started any better; a ball lifted over the centre
backs from midfield allowed Thomas to attack from the left flank, lifting the
ball over the keeper and allowing Manuel to bundle the ball home. 1-0.
In truth Stur could well have scored more goals in the first half, with
decent amounts of possession and some good chances created. Parley were showing
little potency at the other end, with a lack of fluency evident in their forward
play and thus no chances of note in the first half. This was also down to the
quality showed in defence by the Marshall centre halves Reynolds and Griffiths.
At the start of the second half, Manuel went through on goal and put the ball
low and towards the net, only for the Parley keeper to make a good save to push
the ball onto the post and wide. Nevertheless, just before the hour mark, a ball
across from left to right by Manuel bounced over the oncoming defender. Thomas
left for Geddes, who was having a very bright game down the wing, and he ran
through on goal before cutting inside a defender and showing composure to coolly
fire the ball with his left-foot into the bottom left-hand corner. 2-0.
At this point there was a slight lapse in concentration when a Parley forward
was allowed too much space on the edge of the box. With Shear stranded,
fortunately for the home side the ball cannoned off the bar and into the
keeper's grateful arms.
And so it came that two substitutes, having been absent for the recent run of
fine form, linked up to seal the game with 20 minutes remaining. A Neville
corner from the right was floated high into the box and Wood rose highest at the
back post to header down and past the goalkeeper. 3-0 and the game as a contest
was as good as over.
From here the game petered out. In reality, Stur had cantered to their 6th
win in a row and continue to put pressure on those sides around them. Surely
they will be severely tested however when they welcome Hamworthy Recreation, the
reigning league champions, to Churchill Close on Wednesday evening.
