Stur continued their bright start to the season with this ultimately
comfortable win over Swanage Town.
Stur made the brighter start and they should have gone ahead after ten
minutes when Dan Neville hit a free kick into the box and Tim Littler lost his
marker but volleyed against the crossbar. Thomas then went close for Swanage
when he controlled the ball and hit a first time volley just over the bar.
The Swanage centre backs had no answer to the pace of the Stur forwards and
were reduced to committing a series of cynical fouls in their desperate attempts
to prevent several promising moves bearing fruit. When Scott Logan was scythed
down for the third time in as many minutes the referee dished out a belated
booking to the offender, but unfortunately the Stur youngster had sustained an
injury and had to be withdrawn from the action.
The home side continued to have the best of things and took a deserved lead
ten minutes before the break. The award of a penalty for what looked like a
clear-cut handball looked fairly straightforward but having disputed every
decision the referee had made up until now the Swanage players were certainly
not going to let this one go without a fight. The visiting keeper was eventually
cautioned when he refused to give up his protests, but his attempts to unsettle
the penalty taker came to naught when Dan Manuel hammered the spot kick high
into the net.
Having fallen behind, Swanage then had their best spell of the game and the
home side were left ruing their inability to turn pressure into goals when the
visitors equalised on the stroke of half time. A free kick was fired in from the
left and Stur old boy Jason Thomas managed to enough of a touch on the ball to
divert it past Maitland at the near post.
HT 1-1
The second half started like the first with the home side were in the
ascendancy. Swanage had an amazing let off when good work by Manuel set up
Coakes. With the keeper out of the picture, the Stur man looked certain to score
but his shot was cleared off the line. At the other end, Maitland scrambled away
a goalbound header. The subsequent corner was cleared upfield, The Swanage
keeper and centre back made a complete hash of dealing with the high ball and
Manuel nipped between them and hit a cheeky half-volley into the unguarded net.
It was all Stur from this point in. Darrell Williams was upended in the box
and Manuel netted his hat trick goal from the spot.
Scott Thomas rounded off a fine victory for the home side when he exchanged
passes with Manuel on the edge of the box before placing the ball past the
advancing keeper and into the corner of the net.
