Stur made the long trip to Wincanton and can consider themselves unlucky not
to have returned home with at least a point from what is always a tricky
fixture.
Wincanton opened the scoring in the tenth minute. It seemed the danger had
been cleared when the ball was put out for a throw in, but when Wincanton packed
players into the box it should have given a clue as to what was to come. Sure
enough, the long throw which was launched to the far post made Rory Delap's
efforts look like Duncan Norvelle putting the shot. The static Stur defence
allowed a Wincanton forward a free header and Shear had no chance of saving the
close range effort.
A Keystone Cops moment almost saw Stur equalise. You could almost hear the
carnival dee-dee-diddle-diddle-der-der-derrr-der music playing as the Wincanton keeper's
attempted clearance hit Dan Manuel and ricocheted back to him. His second
attempt at hacking the ball away hit Sam Goodwin and again ricocheted back
towards his goal. Now in an utter panic, and with the imposing figures of
Assagba and Goodwin bearing down on him, the Wincanton custodian finally managed to
get some distance on his clearance only for it to falll straight to Joe Wood on the half way line
who hammered the ball towards the empty goal. Unfortunately for Stur, and
fortunately for the madly scrambling and panic stricken Wincanton keeper, the ball drifted just wide.
Ht: 1-0
Stur were coping with the Stoke-like tactics employed by Wincanton very well,
and had the better of the second period. The better chances were created by the
visitors. Unfortunately those chances were squandered. Assagba had a goal
dubiously ruled out for a foul, and a decent penalty shout was refused by the
referee who ruled that a hand ball was accidental. Manuel created a good chance
for himself when he turned his man and cut inside from the left. The keeper just
managed to tip his curling effort round the post. The visitors sent on Johnson
and Geddes and threw caution to the wind in an attempt to get the equaliser
their performance deserved, but Wincanton defended well and held on for the win.
