Table toppers Stur Marshall welcomed Maiden Newton &
Cattistock to Churchill cCose looking to really push on and show exactly why
they are top.
The game got underway and some impressive play from the
start found Stur leading after only 3 minutes when Luke Geddes latched onto a
squared ball from his strike partner Jones and tucked it away nicely. With the
away side having barely touched the ball they resumed play and it wasn’t long
before Stur went 2-0 up as some neat play saw Erkan header back across goal for
the impressive Rudd to volley home at the back post and continue his fine record
of scoring in every game he has played in this season.
With such a great start you would think the home side would
want to continue playing the great football the first 10 minutes produced but
this wasn’t to be the case. Stur sat back thinking the game would win itself
and this proved costly as a high ball wasn’t dealt with and the bounce saw a
Maiden striker clean through who fired home, leaving stand in keeper Talbot no
chance.
2-1 and with the game seemingly turning in Maiden Newton’s
favour the league leaders couldn’t seem to complete even the simplest of passes
and found themselves under continuous pressure from the visiting side, and only
several smart saves from the outstanding Talbot kept Stur in the game. His
heroics weren’t going to be enough as halftime approached when a Maiden striker
found space in the box and guided a header home.
Half-time 2-2
Manager Foster showed his dark side and delivered some
harsh words in the interval. Clearly highlighting the lack of effort and
determination that had seen Stur throw away an early two goal lead. To quote
Foster: ‘You are playing like *@!*&.....’ Enough said I think….
The half time dressing down appeared to get the team fired
up and it was within a few minutes that Stur regained the lead through Jones who
latched on to a Rudd through ball and from this point on there was barely any
looking back.
The goals continued to come as Jones fired home from a Luke
Geddes squared ball before completing his hat-trick moments later as he lobbed
the visiting keeper from a Miller through ball.
That wasn’t to be the only hat-trick of the game as Luke
Geddes fired in goals 6 and 7 to complete his hat-trick. The first being a
simple goal as he pounced on some uncertain goalkeeping and the second saw him
played through by Jones and round the Maiden Keeper.
The final Goal of the day saw Rudd pick up his second late
on as he fired home after being supplied by Luke Geddes, although if Tom knew the
offside rule and could abide by it then he surely would have had at least 4 more
to his name on the day.... Well either that or the Maiden linesman had a nervous
twitch in his right arm every time Rudd exploited the acres of space on the left
wing!!
8 – 2 the final result but a very poor performance from the
home side who will need to be much better next week when they welcome Milborne
to Churchill Close. Today’s game also saw Jack Geddes pick up a yellow card for
a petulant kick out at a Maiden defender. Had the referee seen the incident then
it would surely have been an early shower.
Andy Talbot picked up the coveted Man of the Match award
for his heroics in the first half which provided the base for a Stur victory.
