After going joint top last weekend the Reserve side
were looking to push on and gain another 3 points this week away to Wyke
Regis Social Club who are struggling towards the foot of Division 2.
With top goal scorer Tom Rudd missing through the
common illness of Wife-wearing-the-trousers syndrome and skipper Lambert
unavailable due to a visit to the capital, the reserves lined up with a
couple of changes from last weekend with Steve Johnston returning to the
line up and Logan coming in to partner Ambler up front, whilst the versatile
Jones was asked to occupy the left side of midfield.
It took the reserves all of about 8 minutes to take the
lead on a blustery Saturday afternoon as Logan found time to shoot from the
edge of the Wyke box only for his shot to be saved by the home keeper but
Ambler made no mistakes pouncing on the rebound for a simple tap in.
The second goal wasn’t far behind and this time it was
this season’s top provider Jones who flicked on for Dave Johnston. Johnston
managed to round 2 players as he broke into the opposition area before
coolly slotting home.
2-0 and the reserves were seemingly in control with 11
men and rarely troubled it was a slight surprise at how the next goal came
around. Not happy with just an honest display running the line, it was Kev
who decided he wanted in on the act when he stopped the ball flying out of
play for a Stur throw in their own half. The ball quickly picked up and
launched forward by Hall at left back and Dave Johnston was again bearing
down on goal from the left flank. His resulting shot was finely saved but
his brother Steve was on hand to turn in the loose ball and continue his
impressive start to this season. It appeared Kev was merely seeking revenge
at the expense of the home side as he foolishly requested directions from
some local youngsters on his way to the ground, who took great delight in
sending him completely the wrong way.
With the Sur lads 3-0 up and in total control it shows
how costly a lapse in concentration can be. On a day when a clean sheet
shouldn’t have been an issue, a lack of communication in the Stur rearguard
saw a Wyke striker break clear and a rush of blood to the head from
Dickinson in the Stur goal as he came charging out of his area saw the Wyke
striker round him and slot home.
3-1 and the half time whistle blows.
Stur resumed the second half with no changes being
made and were sent out with instructions to put the game to bed.
Shortly in to the second half some good work in and
around the Wyke area had the home defence scrambling to clear their lines as
a defender managed to release the ball from his keeper’s hands and Logan was
on hand to apply the finish after some uncertain defending to make it 4-1.
The game was put beyond doubt midway through the
around the 65 minute mark when Stur were awarded a free kick inside the Wyke
left channel. Stand in skipper Miller delivered a superb ball into the box
which found Erkan unmarked at the back post and he headed in to make it 5-1.
The 6th and final goal of the game came
when Luke Geddes was introduced with 25 minutes to go. He immediately picked
up the ball on the Wyke left and strolled into the box before squaring to
Ambler to get his 2nd of the game.
As the game drew to an end, newcomer Luke Goddard was
given a brief run out at the expense of Love as Stur saw the game home and
recorded another great victory without really getting out of second gear!
This week’s victory saw The Reserves go top of the
league after our 4 closest rivals all drew. Let’s hope we can stay there
now. Well done gents!!
