Considering the great feeling around the club after the
result against Westlands last week, Stur were very confident that they could go
to Cranborne and gain another 3 points. Even when 5 of last week's starting 11
were ruled out, the team were still very confident. Darrell Williams and Gareth
Thomas were at a wedding, Scott Thomas and Matt Jones were injured, and Joe Wood
was serving a suspension for a red card gained in a Sunday game.
Unfortunately this meant that Stur travelled to the Mick
Loader Memorial Ground with just a bare 11, plus assistant manager Abbott and
manager Morris on the bench.
Despite starting relatively brightly, the away side could
not put together a final ball, and individual decision making was poor, meaning
that the scores remained level. After this there seemed to be no flow to our
game, and Cranborne grew into it, getting some joy from the long diagonal ball
and winning the flick-ons. It was through this that the first goal came about; a
direct ball from the Cranborne defence seemed that it would not pose a danger.
However, a mix up in communication between Neville and Shear in the home goal
meant that the ball was headed backwards into the path of Hepworth who was
brought down by Shear. He dusted himself down and duly dispatched the penalty,
sending Shear the wrong way. 1-0.
With a good 15 minutes left in the first half, Stur were
hopeful that they could pop up with an equaliser. Nevertheless, a lack of
ruthlessness and quality final balls let them down.
After some home truths at half time, the away side were
confident that they could turn the game around as long as they kept the ball
down and played their usual passing game. This seemed to work for a while and
Stur dominated the game, although it was ultimately to no avail. Hard work was
not shown all over the park and Stur struggled yet again to forge some clear cut
chances, although there were many half chances. The killer blow unfortunately
came with the side pushing forward; this exposed Neville and Reynolds at the
back and Hepworth showed neat footwork to skip past Neville and drill the ball
low and into the bottom right-hand corner, although Shear managed to get
fingertips to it.
At this point Abbott came on, shortly to be followed
by Morries. It seemed that the game was all but over, with Cranborne sitting
deep happy to defend their 2 goal advantage. Stur, however, nearly hit back
immediately, when a cross from Jack Geddes on the right was attacked by Manuel,
who was bundled to the ground for a penalty. Manuel stepped up confidently, but
unfortunately his shot, high and to the right, was saved at full stretch by the
home keeper.
It appeared that this would sum up Stur's day, and
Cranborne managed to hold out for a clean sheet. Stur were poor today and it
seems that certain players were missed, with the side failing to get out of the
lower gears despite their best efforts during this game. Perhaps complacency was
also a problem considering the excellent win in the week previous.
