The home teams
cursed season continued with no fewer than six first choice players being
unavailable. This gave Bowmer the opportunity to look at some of the reserves
and youth team player Tommy Hoares, who turned in a good showing on his debut
and will no doubt be a regular 1st team player in the future. Ham Rec came into
the game having beaten Portland at the weekend and were looking to push
themselves back up the table.
The game started
with Rec on top, quickly getting into their stride and putting the home defence
on the back foot. Rec nearly took lead after 10 minutes when Walker pushed a
shot onto the bar. As the game began to take shape the referee’s whistle became
the focal point and threatened to ruin an entertaining game, with a string of
unnecessary interruptions. Thomas looked lively up front and was giving the Rec
defence a hard time with pace and enthusiasm. Just before half time, Thomas got
through only to be thwarted by Leonard in the Rec goal. As the teams went in at
half time with the score at 0-0 Stur were doing well and holding their own.
The 2nd half
started disastrously for the home side with Notley scoring in the first couple
of minutes. A stur throw in on the edge of Rec's penalty area was intercepted
and the away side broke away with Rigler who laid the ball off to Notley who
placed the ball passed Walker.
Another defensive
mistake saw Notley get his second of the night and with it put the game out of
the home sides reach. Mole had to be replaced by Gage after the defender picked
up an injury. Saunders was replaced by Campion as stur tried to force the way
back into the game. Saunders was impressive on his first outing in the 1st team
this term.
As stur pushed gaps
where beginning to open up for the Rec forwards and Walker was called upon to
make a smart save from Rigler. The third goal was not far away and it fell to
Notley who completed his hat trick with a smart finish.
Stur managed a late
consolation when McLeod put in Thomas who fired passed Leonard into the bottom
corner for his 1ST senior goal, which he deserved after a hard working
performance.
Bowmer was left
disappointed by the goals that were conceded but was pleased with the
performance of the players who had come into the side.
