A poor performance
from Stur was punished by the impressive Portland
United,
in this league cup fixture.
The islanders started
quickly, applying pressure on the home side from the
off and enjoying the majority of the possession. Stur had not played for 4 weeks and it showed, with the team off
the pace and struggling to cope with Portland's passing and movement.
Portland deservedly went in at half time 5-0 up,
with goals from
Adam Linaker (2), Pat White, Alex Halloran and Ross Doige.
In the second half Stur improved. The team
upped their work-rate and made better use of the ball when in possession.
After 65 mins, Stur scored with a goal from Will
Gage. The youngster converted a neat volley from a chipped Sweetland
free-kick. Stur pressed in search of more goals but their efforts were too
late.
Bowmer was more than disappointed with the teams
performance, but gave credit to Portland describing them as "the best team that
we have played this season" and adding "they will win the league this season for
sure".
The result puts Stur out of the
DPL League Cup and Portland United move 6 points clear at the top of the group.
