Stur Marshall picked
up a well deserved point against third place Westland in an entertaining 0-0
draw on Churchill close.
Walker was called up
to replace the injured Maitland and was tested in the opening minute when he
pulled off the save of the day. The ball given away cheaply in midfield
and an opposing player struck a shot destined for the top corner until a flying
Walker tipped the effort over the bar. The wind was the dominate force in
the early exchanges with the ball getting away from both sets of players but
after a time the play settled down with both teams trying to play attractive
football which made for a good game.
Stur started to
dominant in midfield with the impressive Hounsell carrying on his good form
along with the returning Duff, which provided a solid platform from which Stur
could push on from. Sturs first real effort fell to Lane who fired
narrowly wide, with the goal at his mercy.
As the half came to a
close Westland’s came within a whisker of taking the lead when two crosses where
missed by the on rushing forwards. The last chance of the half fell to Revel who
rose well at a corner to head wide of the target.
With the wind behind
Stur in the second half they continued to look the stronger of the two sides
playing some good one and two touch football, however as in recent weeks the
final ball was missing meaning the opposing keeper was never really tested.
Walker was again called into action saving well with his legs and then tipping
over a dipping shot.
Pathak was introduce
with half an hour to go and was quickly into his stride upsetting the opposing
defenders with his pace. Stur were awarded a free kick which Sweetland drove
across the goal looking for the faintest of touches to open scoring but to no
avail. With 15 minutes to go, new signing from Poole Town Campion was brought
into foil and looked impressive in the short space of time he was on the pitch.
With the game
fizzling out to a draw a Westland’s player was dismissed for comment to the
referee and after the final whistle a further player was dismissed for the same
reason.
A final score of 0-0
suited the home team more in their battle to avoid the drop. Bowmer was pleased
with the reaction of the player after the two previous results.
