Two late goals
from Mark Henson were enough to give an under par Stur all three points from a
scrappy encounter.
Having scored
five in their previous outing against Blandford, Stur started the game as though
they were determined to repeat the feat and put their visitors from Somerset to
the sword in similar fashion. Wincanton were struggling to cope with the pace of
the home forwards and several chances went begging before the hosts eventually
opened the scoring in the 20th minute, Williams firing home from
close range after the defence failed to clear a corner. The referee then turned
down what appeared to be a perfectly good penalty appeal when the Wincanton
keeper pulled down Henson who was clear through on goal.
The goal seemed
to rouse the visitors and they began to get a foothold in the game. Just before
the break, a wonderful strike from distance ended up in the back of the Stur
net, but was ruled out for offside and so the home side retired for their half
time break a goal to the good.
Early in the
second half, Mole and Duff had to be replaced because of injury and the changes
seemed to unsettle the home side. Wincanton drew level when Vine fired a right
wing cross into the roof of the net and took the lead shortly afterwards when a
poor back pass sold Maitland short and Plaine was left with the relatively
simple task of placing the ball past the Stur skipper and into the back of the
net.
Stur were not finished though and
equalised in the 70th minute. Wincanton took a quick free kick,
MacLeod won the ball and hit the ball forward. Henson outpaced the defence and
coolly rounded the keeper. Five minutes later and the home side regained the
lead when Elliot made a determined run down the left and forced the ball into
the path of Henson who controlled the ball and fired home the winner.
